Kiwi - By Paul

Kiwis are New Zealand’s native they are called birds but they can’t fly because they have no wings. And they are endangered.

Appearance

The Kiwi stands up to 25 inches tall. It has brown and black feathers, large hind legs, black eyes & a long beak that it uses to eat food. Due to it colour, it camouflages easily. Sporting small wings, the kiwi is unable to fly. Also it lives on floor.

Habitat

Commonly found in New Zealand forest, the kiwi lives hunts & breads on the ground although they are native to NZ, the majority and live around Wellington, Fjordland, Northland & Stewart Island.
They are endangered species. The threat is from predators like dogs, cat, rats, stoats, & human hunters have left only 2 million kiwi in NZ. Even though they have lots of abilities, they are still endangered

Abilities

Kiwis have great smell for example if a kiwi is looking for food the kiwi will straight a way smell food around them and also if the food is a little far away. During the mating season, they call each other at a dark night, also meet each others about 3 days in the nesting burrow. Kiwis have good eyes so they can see in the dark. They sleep in burrows, hollow logs, or in the middle of dense vegetation. Also kiwis are nocturnal because at night they hunt food or eat food and they don’t have wings because they look for food on ground.

Diet

All kiwis eat small invertebrates, seeds, grubs,  many varieties of worms and other insects. And they also eat fruits, small crayfish, eels, cold blooded animals, berries, seeds and some leaves. Kiwis can get all the water they need from their food because they use earthworms because they are 85% water. And they find food at snowy mountain, forest floors and coastal sand dunes.

Life Cycle

Kiwi get reported as a breeding animal. THey produce very big eggs with the consistency of battery hens. Kiwi chicks hatch fully feathered and opened eyes also they survive for yolk for several days. Kiwi live to 30 years to 20 years.

And When a kiwi is born it happens again.
